Indian Institute of Technology Courses

The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree is the most popular and sought-after undergraduate degree given by IITs. Dual degrees and integrated courses are five-year programs with ten semesters, while the B.Tech course is based on a four-year program with eight semesters.

Every IIT student in the first year of B.Tech. and dual degree programs follows the same course plan and study subjects related to their particular streams from the second year. The placement process for the different IITs is conducted in the final year, which places the majority of students into industries and organizations.

IIT Admission Undergraduate Courses

IIT admissions for undergraduate B.Tech courses are conducted through Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE), which has two phases: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. These are computer-based online exams. To be admitted to an IIT, candidates must pass both tests. The two phases of JEE are explained below.

  • JEE Mains: This is the initial phase of the IIT Joint Entrance Exam. It is a screening test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to select eligible candidates who will appear for the next phase, i.e., the JEE Advanced exam.

  • JEE Advanced: It is the second and final phase of JEE, and the candidates who qualify for this exam with the required cutoff score are shortlisted according to their ranks for admission to IITs of their choice.

The number of applicants for the JEE exam is huge as compared to the number of seats available in different IITs. It makes the JEE exams quite competitive and challenging for students seeking IIT admissions.

IIT Admission for Postgraduate Courses

The Indian Institute of Technology also offers postgraduate courses for eligible candidates. The postgraduate programs include M.Sc., M.Tech., M.Des., or MBA courses with specific specializations. Candidates seeking admission to different PG courses need to pass the following entrance exams, depending on the programs:.

  • M.Tech programs: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

  • MBA programs: Common Admission Test (CAT)

  • M.Sc. programs: IIT Joint Admission Test (JAM)

  • M.Des programs: Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) scores
