New NEET 2024 Tie-Breaking Criteria: The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2024 is the most crucial entrance exam for medical aspirants. With a large number of students appearing for the exam, there is a possibility that two or more students will score the same marks in NEET UG 2024.
In such situations, a tie-breaker policy determines which candidate should be given the higher rank and considered for admission to medical institutions. In this article, we will explain the tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024 in detail to help candidates understand the process without any confusion or ambiguity.
NEET UG 2024 Tie-Breaking Process
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has designed the tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024 to rank the eligible candidates based on their performance in different subjects in NEET 2024. The NTA has modified the tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024 by incorporating more factors than the existing ones.
By applying all these tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024, candidates achieving equal scores in NEET 2024 can be suitably assessed for the ranking and get chances for admission to medical courses. The following section will explain the tie-breaking process if two or more candidates score equal marks.
NEET UG Tie-Breaking Policy
The three different tie-breaking policies that were followed by NTA till last year are discussed below:
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 1
In the first step, the NEET Biology marks of concerned candidates will be considered, and the candidate who gets higher marks in biology will be considered for a higher ranking. It is explained below with an example.
|
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 1 |
|
|
Candidate |
Marks scored in NEET Biology |
|
X |
302 |
|
Y |
295 |
|
Z |
308 |
In this case, candidate Z will get preference over Candidate X and Candidate Y. Again, candidate X will get preference over Candidate Y.
If all the candidates also get same score in the Biology section, then tie-breaking criteria 2 will be applied.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 2
In this step, the NEET Chemistry marks of these will be considered. The candidate achieving more marks in chemistry than others will be considered for a higher ranking. The example given below explains this.
|
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 2 |
||
|
Candidate |
Marks scored in NEET Biology |
Marks scored in NEET Chemistry |
|
A |
298 |
172 |
|
B |
298 |
166 |
|
C |
293 |
168 |
In this case, candidates A and B get the same marks in NEET Biology. Still, candidate A scores higher in NEET Chemistry, so candidate A will be preferred.
Again, it is to be noted that although candidate C gets higher NEET chemistry marks than A, it will not be considered in this stage because C is already ranked below A due to fewer marks in biology.
If the candidates under tie-breaking in this stage also have equal scores in the Chemistry section, then tie-breaking criteria 3 comes into place.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 3
In this stage, the candidate with the least incorrect answers in the NEET exam will be identified, considering all the sections, such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Those who have given the minimum incorrect answers among the tie-breaking candidates will get a higher ranking than others. The example is given below.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy Statement 3 |
|||
|
Candidate |
Marks scored in NEET Biology |
Marks scored in NEET Chemistry |
Number of incorrect answers overall |
|
P |
309 |
167 |
33 |
|
Q |
309 |
167 |
25 |
|
R |
309 |
167 |
41 |
In this case, candidate Q is ranked higher than P and Q since the number of incorrect answers is the least.
Revised NEET 2024 Tie-Breaking Criteria
The NTA has implemented specific NEET 2024 tie-breaking criteria changes. This year, after considering marks in the Biology and Chemistry sections, marks obtained in the Physics section will also be considered to resolve issues related to tie-breaking when two or more candidates achieve the same scores in NEET 2024.
Moreover, if the tie persists, qualified applicants will be chosen by a computer draw, devoid of human involvement. The key points of tie-breaking criteria that will take effect with the NEET UG Exam in 2024 are given below.
Step 1: Candidates with higher marks/percentile scores in the Biology (Botany and Zoology) section of NEET 2024.
If a tie is still not resolved, then:
Step 2: Candidates who have obtained higher marks/percentile scores in the Chemistry section of NEET 2024
If a tie is still not resolved, then:
Step 3: Candidates who have obtained higher marks/percentile scores in the Chemistry section of NEET 2024
If a tie is still not resolved, then:
Step 4: Selection of candidates using a computerized system of drawing lots.
The Computerized Lot Drawing Process
In this technique, application numbers of NEET applicants who have scored equal numbers in the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics sections of NEET 2024 are entered into the computer, and the system randomly selects an application number without any manual intervention. This approach ensures that the chosen application number is selected impartially.
NEET Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution
Students getting updated on the tie-breaking criteria for NEET 2024 also need to be familiar with the NEET 2024 exam pattern and marks distribution for different sections. The NEET 2024 exam pattern with many questions and marks is given in the table below.
