Most of the students grow up with the dream of becoming doctors in the future. The gateway to the goal is through exams like NEET exam and AIIMS exam. These are national-level examinations that aim to admit students to different medical programs in various institutions. Even though they have common goals, there are still some differences between these exams. So, in this article, we will discuss the AIIMS Entrance exam and  NEET Entrance exam.

NEET exam and AIIMS exam: Overview

To get an admission in top medical institutions, medical entrance exams are very important. Some of the top and most competitive entrance exams are NEET and AIIMS. Both exams are focused on assessing students' knowledge for pursuing a career in medicine. So, before moving further in the blog, let us get an overview for comparing NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam.

NEET Exam

The National Eligibility and Entrance Test, or NEET entrance exam, is a highly competitive entrance examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the exam. It is for students who want to study medicine and dentistry in public or private colleges across the country. NEET exam was introduced by the Government of India in 2013 as a single examination. It aims to eliminate multiple state-level and institution-level medical entrance exams. The selection process for the NEET exam is solely on merit.

AIIMS Exam

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences administers the AIIMS exam. The AIIMS is a prominent autonomous institute that provides undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It  is one of the most competitive medical entrance exams in India. AIIMS is one of India's most competitive medical entrance tests. The exam is developed exclusively for entrance to the undergraduate programme, that is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). 

Difference between NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam

Purpose of the exam

NEET exam is conducted for admission to various undergraduate medical and dental courses in government and private colleges across India. It serves as a common entrance exam for medical admission to MBBS, BDS, and other related courses. On the other hand, the AIIMS or the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Exam is specifically conducted for admission to the MBBS program in the AIIMS institutes.

NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam: Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for the NEET exam and AIIMS exam are mostly the same. Here are the criteria required to sit for the exams.  

  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen. In addition, Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), can also apply for the exam.
  • Candidates must have completed their senior secondary school from a recognized board or university. Moreover, they must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects. 
  • The minimum mark for general students is 60%, whereas, for  SC/ST/OPH/NRIs, it is 50%. 
  • The candidate must be at least 17 years old.

NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam: Syllabus

The syllabus for AIIMS Exam and NEET Exam are quite overlapping. Both exams primarily focus on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, as these are the core subjects for medical education. The topics covered in these subjects are similar for both exams. Hence students preparing for NEET will also cover most of the content required for AIIMS. However, for the AIIMs, there are two extra sections, i.e. General Knowledge and Aptitude.

NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam: Exam Pattern

The NEET exam is of 3 hours and includes 180 Objective questions. It includes 3 sections, i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The Physics and Chemistry sections carry 45 questions each and the Biology section has 90 questions. While a student gets +4 marks for a correct answer, 1 mark is deducted for an incorrect response.

On the other hand, the AIIMS entrance exam paper carries 200 objective questions. Students have to attempt these questions in 3.5 hours. It includes five sections, i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Aptitude, and General Knowledge. The Physics, Chemistry, and Biology sections carry 60 questions each, and the GK and Aptitude section has ten questions each. Moreover, for every wrong answer, the -1/3 mark is deducted.

NEET Exam and AIIMS Exam: Competition and difficulty level

NEET is one of the most difficult competitive exams, and lakhs of students appear for the exam. There is very high competition due to a large number of applicants applying for limited seats. However, the level of competition is generally more in AIIMS than in NEET. The number of seats in AIIMS institutes is relatively limited compared to the NEET exam. The difficulty level of the NEET exam is generally moderate to high. But the AIIMS exam is more challenging compared to NEET.

1. Is the AIIMS exam harder than the NEET exam?

Ans- Both the NEET and AIIMS are renowned and highly competitive entrance exams for medical aspirants. These exams serve as gateways to prestigious medical colleges in the country. While both exams are challenging, it can be said that AIIMS is more difficult to score well in compared to NEET.

2. Is 650 marks enough for AIIMS exam?

Ans- In AIIMS, 650 marks is a very good score.  Students with this score have a good chance of getting into AIIMS, one of India's most prominent medical colleges.

3. Is AIIMS exam and NEET exam combined?

Ans- No, AIIMS and NEET are separate entrance exams for medical education in India. They are not combined. Most medical colleges in India recognise NEET exam scores, while AIIMS has its own entrance exam for admission to AIIMS institutes.
